On the occasion of the World Environment Day, which is a part of United Nation’s initiative, a new theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ is trending on social media. Celebrities are leaving no stone unturned and are actively participating in the campaign. Bollywood stars including Alia Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and many others have shared inspirational messages on Twitter to encourage people to switch to bio-degradable products. Even sports stars like Saina Nehwal, Gautam Gambhir and several others have come forward to raise their voice against the use of plastic. Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has also created a huge sand turtle at Puri beach with a message to curb plastic pollution. Pattnaik wrote, “Created the 55 ft long 30 ft wide sand sculpture of turtle by using about 30 tonne of sand with some colour sand.” Plastic bottles have been used on the sculpture with message “Beat plastic pollution”, he said. The theme for 2018, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time, he added. Around 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year in India, of which only 60 percent, is recycled according to the Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan. Delhi tops the chart of plastic waste with 689.52 tonnes, followed by Chennai (429.39 tonnes), Mumbai (408.27 tonnes), Bengaluru (313.87 tonnes) and Hyderabad (199.33 tonnes).
