Unlike humans, a pet's love is unconditional and they do not hesitate to express it. Your partner can behave rudely with you, have an affair or may lie to you but a pet doesn't. That is the reason why you develop a closer relationship with your pet than your partner. They are always on the top of your priority list. Loving pets and taking care of them is completely different things:
Just like humans, every pet has his favourites and want all their attention. If you are in a relationship or moving in together, it is normal that your pet is jealous or not comfortable (seeing the new face in the house). Lovers always need attention and affection, if you choose your pet more than him/her then don't get emotional why your lover left you and your pet alone. All you need to know is time management and your commitment towards your pet and your loved ones.
Sounds funny but mostly true that if your partner and pet both agree to live with each other, there should be an agreement between both not to fight for you or with you or take advantage of your love for them by stealing your human partner or sharing bed with your lover (lol).
