Meet Maria Andrejczyk who auctioned her Olympic silver medal for 8-month-old's heart surgery

Polish Olympic athlete Maria Andrejczyk auctioned her silver medal from the Tokyo Games to raise money for 8-month-old boy's life-saving surgery. However, the 25-year-old javelin thrower was told by the buyer that she could keep her prize. Maria Andrejczyk, who is a bone cancer survivor, said she decided to auction her medal to help the boy knowing how much she had to “fight against adversity and pain." According to reports, the money is for Milosz Malysa, an infant suffering from a serious heart disease. The boy's family has been raising money for him to be operated on in the United States. Last week, Milosz's parents revealed on social media that the boy was at risk of dying soon without the operation. Zabka, a popular convenience store chain in Poland, bid 200,000 zlotys ($51,000) but said it would let the athlete keep her medal. "We were moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture of our Olympian," Zabka said.
